Main areas of responsibility include:-
Advice on farming legislation and policy including problem solving.
Dissemination of vital information for livestock farmers through briefings, meetings or one to one.
Representation and response to government consultations.

Also Farm Crisis Network (FCN) Regional Director Northern Counties working out of UTASS 2 days per week.

Agricultural Secretary

Main areas of responsibility include:-
Assisting farmers in setting up sustainable methods of dealing with their on farm paperwork.
Training farmers on record keeping requirements.
Supporting farmers with the conversion of their records on to computerised systems.

Training Coordinator & Admin. Support Worker

Main areas of responsibility include:-

Accessing training courses appropriate to members’ requirements and wherever possible arranging these locally.
Administration support for members.

Office Systems Coordinator & Admin. Support Worker

Main areas of responsibility include:-
Producing daily monitoring figures for current funders of the project.
Administration support for members.

Finance & Administration Support Worker

Main areas of responsibility include:-
Dealing with financial matters.
Providing reception and secretarial support to the UTASS project.

Website, Social Media and Administration Support Worker

Main areas of responsibility include:-

  • Providing reception and secretarial support to the UTASS project.

  • Administration for Durham Dales Enterprise Community Interest Company.

  • Webmaster for www.utass.org, as well as running our facebook & twitter accounts.

  • General Medical Practitioner (caring for almost all of the farming families in the Upper Dale)
  • Local GP for 20 years in the 2 partner practice which covers 300 sq miles, centred on Middleton in Teesdale
  • Provides minor injuries service as the nearest District General Hospital is 25 miles away
  • UTASS Trustee since 2000 and Chairperson since 2009
  • Involved with the original research work with rural stress that led to the setting up of UTASS after the epidemic of suicides in 1991
  • Involved in gaining EU funding bid for Counselling services in Upper Teesdale in association with the Primary Care Group
  • Trustee of the Cameron Relief Trust
  • Previously Chairperson of the Primary Care Group and Trustee of St Teresa’s Hospice, Darlington.

  • Responsible for checking & paying invoices and salaries, preparation of monthly figures for presentation to the Trustee Board at monthly meetings as well as cash book, budget v expenditure, income predictions and yearly accounts for auditing
  • Have lived in the Dale since 1984
  • Was part of the committee that restarted one of the best attended youth clubs in the county
  • Served as a Middleton Carnival Committee member for 5 years
  • Held the post of Chairperson for the Middleton in Teesdale  Community School Association for 3 years

  • Large Animal Director and Partner at Castle Veterinary Practice
  • Have working knowledge of most farm businesses in the area
  • Born in Australia but moved (when only 3) with parents to a Dairy farm in Yorkshire where I was brought up
  • Managed a Deer farm in Scotland before going to Vet school
  • As a student I saw practice at the Galgate surgery and was delighted to be offered a job with Castle Vets on graduation, so much so that I’ve stayed ever more!
  • Married with three rapidly growing children, I enjoy living and working in this beautiful part of the country.

  • Actively involved in both committees of High Force and Langdon Beck show, which both promote Swaledale sheep
  • Enjoy showing and promoting Swaledale sheep and Limousin cattle

  • Volunteers once a month by driving the bus for UTASS youth club
